I absolutely cannot believe it's been a little over a year since I not only got to see Sixpence None the Richer perform live, but also met them. It helps you do your homework on the band/artists you're going to see before the show, especially if you get to meet them, so you know what to talk about and which questions to ask. I also like to freshen up on the band's catalogue beforehand as well too especially, if it's a band or artist I'm less familiar with like I was with these guys. I became a fan of them thanks to the duet their lead singer Leigh Nash did with Tears for Fears co-founder Roland Orzabal who I happen to be a major fan of. The song was called "Unraveling" and is featured on Nash's solo album "The Tide: Vol. 2." I was impressed with how perfectly their voices blended together and wanted to know more about Nash. Once I decided to take a deep dive into other songs Nash has worked on along with her background I was then led to Sixpence None the Richer. I was impressed to learn that Sixpence has been around since 1992 and was started in New Braunfels, Texas. I was even more impressed when I met them, which is when I learned that their guitarist Matthew Slocum who has slowly become one of my favorite people ever is the one responsible for writing 90's hits like "Kiss Me", "There She Goes", and Loser Like Me" along with their newer work as well. Another totally impressive thing about these guys which, Slocum is also responsible for is the band's name. A name that was borrowed from C.S. Lewis.
These guys are even more impressive on stage and seem to lose themselves in the music once the lights go down and showtime officially begins. Leigh Nash moves across the stage with such grace once the music begins taking over. Her voice is even more impressive live than it is on any CD. I truly can say seeing them live made me into the fan I was already slowly becoming. You can definitely see why they've barely slowed down since starting in 1992 back in New Braunfels, Texas. These guys are truly more amazing than there are words for and each member is extraordinarily talented in their own right, as well as, being just as underrated as the next. The other members who played that night were Justin Cary who plays bass and Steve Hindalong who played the drums. Some may recognize Hindalong's name from his current band which, is The Choir, and is another band I've recently gotten into. Those guys are pretty amazing too!
Songs like "Rosemary Hill", "Thread the Needle", and "We are Love" were definitely the perfect addition to their catalogue and blend perfectly with their older work. Every penny I spent seeing them live and getting to meet them was definitely well worth it. It's not every day you get to not only watch perform but, get to meet the artist behind the art. Now I have a framed photo that each member signed to commemorate that very night. A night I'll never forget! Can't wait to see what these incredibly underrated legends do next!
